What is Income Tax Return (ITR)?

An Income Tax Return (ITR) is a form used to declare an individual's or entity’s income, deductions, and taxes payable to the Income Tax Department of India. Filing an ITR is mandatory if your total income exceeds the basic exemption limit under the Income Tax Act. It also serves as proof of income for various financial transactions such as loan applications, visa processing, or large investments.

ITR-3 Individuals and HUFs with income from business or profession Proprietors, freelancers, professionals (e.g., doctors, lawyers), and partners in firms
ITR-4 (SUGAM) Individuals, HUFs, and Firms (other than LLP) under presumptive taxation scheme Income under Sections 44AD, 44ADA, or 44AE, turnover ≤ ₹2 crore (business) or ₹50 lakh (profession)
ITR-5 Partnership firms, LLPs, AOPs, BOIs Business entities excluding individual, HUF, and companies filing ITR-6

General Due Dates:

  • 15th September :- For most individual taxpayers (ITR-1 to ITR-4)
  • 31st October :- For firms or those requiring audit
  • 30th November :– For companies or entities that require transfer pricing report
